The Civil War lasted 5 long years. Fathers went off to war, while some teenage boys joined the forces as drummer boys or even went to the front lines.
Some older boys stayed behind with their sisters and younger siblings to take on responsibilities at home. Children played at being soldiers, and homemade amusements were the order of the day.
