Cooperman Company at Cowings Mill

1950s — A Basement Workshop Begins

Mount Vernon, New York
Patrick H. Cooperman begins making drumsticks for himself and fifes for his father-in-law, soon expanding to serve the growing community of traditional fife & drum musicians.

c. 1961 — First Museum Shop Products

Working with Colonial Williamsburg, Cooperman Fife & Drum Co. creates reproduction fifes for their drum corps and develops instruments for museum visitors—marking the beginning of a long relationship with museum gift shops.

1960s–1980s — Growth in Centerbrook

Centerbrook, Connecticut
For more than 30 years, Centerbrook serves as the home base for Cooperman’s expanding line of instruments and historically inspired products. Cooperman Fife & Drum Co. Inc. shortens its DBA name to Cooperman Company to reflect the growing product mix as second generation family members come on board.

1987 — Cowings Mill Revitalized

Bellows Falls, Vermont
Cooperman Company purchases Maplecraft Manufacturing Company, a historic sawmill and wood-bending operation founded in the 1920s by the Cowing brothers, a company that Cooperman has been working with for many years . Craftspeople learn the full process of selecting, sawing, and steam-bending wood from Earle Cowing, the last of the Cowing family to work the mill.

2006 — One Mill, One Workshop

All operations are consolidated at Cowings Mill in Vermont, bringing together instrument making, woodcraft, and product development under one roof.

Today — Continuing the Tradition

From the Vermont mill, Cooperman is a second generation family business that continues to produce musical instruments, traditional toys and games, and everyday goods for musicians, museums, and makers—carrying forward a tradition of craftsmanship rooted in generations of experience.
