Here at Cowings Mill, in the last of the old time sawmills along the Saxtons River in southern Vermont, everything we make - toys, games, music, everyday life items - is all about history and tradition.

Outdoor Games: Historical and Traditional

Rolling, racing, and tossing hoops is a childhood tradition the world over. These games were popular in early America and are still popular today, even as the game rules and hoop materials change over time. We bend the hoops for our historical toys and games here at our Vermont shop in the traditional way, steaming green lumber cut into slats from local trees and bending it to form our solid wood hoops.

Toys & Games: Historical and Traditional

Traditional toys & games remain beloved by children everywhere. Each generation knows these toys and games by different names - over time, the Game of Five-stones becomes the Game of Jacks, coin "whirligigs" turn into "buzz saws", and rolling hoops take on new life as hula hoops - while families continue to create lasting memories having fun together with these playthings.

Citizens as Soldiers: Militia Men, Minutemen, and the Blue & Gray

The Revolutionary War and the Civil War were fought by both volunteer and conscripted men. 18th century militia men brought equipment from home into Washington's newly organized but poorly supplied Continental Army, and sometimes their families would follow the troops. Soldiers fighting in the Civil War were better equipped with weapons, but they often they made their own bullets. In past times as today, soldiers bring personal items to camp for memories or entertainments.

Everyday Life in 18th & 19th Century America

Commonplace items open a window for us into the culture of early America. The coins they used in trade, household items like quill pens, and even small nods to vanity like feathers for men's and women's hats, all speak volumes about the everyday lives led by colonists, pioneers, and other early Americans.
