A working firearm was a prized possession during the 18th and 19th centuries, indispensable in everyday life to the hunter, farmer, or frontiersman, and often a finely crafted status symbol for the gentleman sportsman. The term "dummy gun" comes from the 18th century, when young militia recruits were given sticks or simply shaped, non-functioning "guns" for practice in drilling and marching in formation.

The notorious pirate Blackbeard was known to have carried three or more of these Naval Pistol guns belted across his chest. Our wooden pistol represents an 18th century Sea Service Pistol, a size common aboard military men-of-war ships as well as the fast running sloops of the privateers and pirates in the 18th century.
