Collection: Music in Early America: In the Field

Music accompanied soldiers throughout daily life in early America, from the routines of camp to the movements of the field. Simple, portable instruments such as fifes, whistles, and rhythm instruments were used to signal commands, mark time, and provide moments of recreation.

This collection brings together traditional instruments associated with military life—used both for communication and for personal enjoyment. Carried easily and played anywhere, they reflect the role of music in maintaining rhythm, connection, and morale in the midst of uncertainty.
